ReEstablish Richmond Wants You to Paint Possibilities for Youth!

The Refugee + Immigrant journey looks different for each individual. Regardless of whether someone was forcibly displaced or chose to resettle here, the one universal truth is that parents want a better life and new opportunities for their children. That is why, in 2020, ReEstablish Richmond started a small initiative to connect youth (and their parents) to the resources they need to build a strong future here.

We believe that youth deserve no less than the opportunities their parents came to the United States seeking. ReEstablish Richmond has big plans for our youth programming. We have the foundation laid, and in 2022-2023, we hope to expand our connections in the following areas:

Tusome Pamoja:

  • What? A Saturday school for students with limited or interrupted education
  • How? ReEstablish Richmond refers students to the program, recruits and trains volunteers to provide instruction and homework help during each Saturday session

Narratio Fellowship

  • What? A storytelling and leadership program aimed at providing 9-12 resettled refugee youth with the tools and resources to share their narratives and creative works on the world stage. This summer, youth will explore storytelling through painting.
  • How? ReEstablish Richmond will provide volunteer and logistical support for the Narratio Fellowship that is coming to Richmond summer 2022. We need to raise $15,000 to pay a stipend to the 12 refugee and youth who participate.

Peer Tutoring

  • What? A peer tutoring program designed for volunteers under the age of 18 who are matched with refugee and immigrant youth for homework help and tutoring.
  • How? ReEstablish Richmond recruits, trains, and supports youth volunteers. We are in the process of developing relationships with local high schools who require their students to complete service hours, benefitting both the tutor and the student.

MYVA

  • What? A mentorship program that supports educational and vocational advancement for refugee youth. Youth are matched with a mentor for 6-12 months and focus on developing leadership skills and college and career readiness.
  • How? ReEstablish Richmond partners with the International Rescue Committee in Richmond to recruit, train, and support mentors.

Help us raise $25,000 before World Refugee Day on June 20th to support and expand these exciting programs!
