What does it take to sustain a Community of Welcome?

We live in increasingly unwelcome times, where the rhetoric toward refugees and immigrants is blatantly toxic. An unwelcome atmosphere is not new phenomenon in our region, but neither is the work of Welcome. For nearly 15 years, ReEstablish Richmond has seen the diligent work of welcome around Richmond and we have worked to cultivate a stronger community of welcome. How do we sustain this work of welcome in unwelcome times?

It takes intentionality- Welcome doesn't happen on accident. Sustaining the work of welcome takes consistent and responsive action. Whether it is an English tutor showing up week after week to work on English, or a staff member listening deeply to the needs of a client, ReEstablish Richmond is committed to being there for newcomers regardless of the atmosphere of welcome in our region.

It takes relationships- Across differences and across the web of service providers, faith communities, community groups, and newcomer organizations, welcome takes all of us. ReEstablish Richmond will continue to foster spaces of belonging where people can find common values, celebrate our multicultural community and build strong coalitions so no one is left behind.

It takes resources- a welcoming community requires practical structures that help people feel welcome. From the resources it takes to support our staff in their work, to the generous time of volunteers, we know that providing practical tools and support are the building blocks for newcomers to build a sustainable life in our community.

And it takes you. Join us in the work of welcome. Help us strengthen a community that welcomes all—donate today to reach our goal of $30,000 by World Refugee Day.
